[7/1/2011] Preview: Bruno Walter comes to America (continued)

>

Bruno Walter was already 64 when he
made his Met debut on February 14, 1941.

WE WANT TO HEAR SOME MUSIC, DON'T WE?

As I mentioned, the 1958 interview we heard comes from the Guild International issue of Walter's February 1941 Met broadcast performance of Fidelio. I thought we might hear that afternoon's performances of the Fidelio Overture and the Leonore Overture No. 3 (included, following a tradition attributed to Gustav Mahler, conducting at the Vienna Court Opera, during the scene change in Act II). This was Walter's second-ever Met performance, on February 22, eight days after his debut performance of Fidelio.

BEETHOVEN: Fidelio, Op. 72: Overture

Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Bruno Walter, cond. Live performance, Feb. 22, 1941

BEETHOVEN: Leonore Overture No. 3, Op. 72b

Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Bruno Walter, cond. Live performance, Feb. 22, 1941

IN TOMORROW NIGHT'S PREVIEW

Since we're headed for Bruno Walter's conducting of Wagner's Siegfried Idyll on Sunday, tomorrow we're going to have a truly beautiful Wagnerian warmup.
